The Barking Dog Trail is a local favorite for its playful singletrack and rich history. Starting near the meadow where a barking dog once stood guard, the trail climbs through shaded ravines, Ponderosa pines, and Douglas firs. Along the way, you’ll pass remnants of old mining pits. Barking Dog meets the Wakina Sky Trail in a meadow with outstanding views of Mount Helena Ridge.
History
In 2023, Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest and Prickly Pear Land Trust rerouted Barking Dog Trail from a doubletrack with erosion problems to a singletrack with mountain bike features. Locals nicknamed the new trail “Purring Kitty.”
Park Rules
- Stay on trails.
- Non-motorized use only, except for motorized adaptive equipment.
- Follow all posted dog regulations. Dogs are allowed off-leash 100 yards from trailhead.
- Clean up after yourself and your pets.
- Horses are allowed on the national forest.
- Dispose of cigarettes properly.
